What is occupational therapy?
You have probably heard of the term ‘occupational therapy’, but might not be 100% familiar with what it actually means or entails. The World Federation of Occupational Therapists defines OT as a “client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement.”
Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions is that occupational therapy is just for ‘getting people back to work’. However, it actually applies to all forms of daily life, such as domestic chores, leisure and hobbies, and anything else which you may do as part of your normal routine.
Suffering with pain or living with the nagging aches and problems can be difficult; and physical impediments, no matter how large or small, can impact your daily quality of life. So if you’re looking to speed up your recovery process, you may want to consider occupational therapy. At Hands On Therapy Services, our Miami Occupational Therapist offers a wide range of occupational therapy services based on your needs.

Who is our Miami Occupational Therapist?
Hoang Tran is an Occupational Therapist (OT/L) and Certified Hand Therapist (CHT). Graduating from the University of Florida in 2000 with a master’s degree in occupational therapy, she first gained experience in acute care settings of hospitals such as Parkway and Cleveland Clinic, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation centers. In 2001, she started working in acute care at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, then moved into the senior outpatient therapy setting five years later. It was right after accepting the outpatient position that she sat for the CHT boards. In 2006 she obtained her national board certification as a Certified Hand Therapist and continued to expand her area of practice in the outpatient setting.
A Word from our Miami Occupational Therapist – Hoang Tran
Just a little about me. My name is Hoang or “Wong”, like a Chinese last name, except it’s a Vietnamese first name. One of my first jobs as an occupational therapist in Miami was in Hialeah at a rehab center. Majority of my patients were Spanish speaking patients only and that’s where I started to learn Spanish. But that’s also where I got my nick name. I went into a patient room to wake an older lady to get up for her therapy and I introduced myself telling her my name is Hoang. She squinted at me and was like “what? What is your name?” So I told her again, “My name is Hoang, I am your occupational therapist and here to get you up for therapy”. Again she squinted and asked me if I was a man or woman….hmmmm so I told her “mujer?” (Because I wasn’t that great with my Spanish yet.) She looked at me and said “Your name is Juanita.” Me: “Yes! My names is Juanita! Let’s get up for therapy!” That’s how I became Juanita over 15 years ago and my nick name stays strong still today. My patients call me that, and so do some of my friends.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with great clients, some great cases, and some great doctors. Thank you for your continued support. Every year…our goal is to serve you…to provide you with an amazing experience all while helping you to get better and achieve your goals to be pain free, active, and avoid surgery.
This coming year, there will be more blog posts that highlight some of the great cases that come to us for hand and arm therapy, helpful tips to help you, and educational posts. We also plan to grow both our occupational and physical therapy programs while keeping that one on one attention that you need to reach your goals in therapy in a timely manner. Because no one has time to be injured!!!!
Hoang’s Role as a Miami Occupational Therapist
First and foremost, I feel extremely lucky to be able to carry out the job that gives me a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, especially when I witness my clients’ recovery from their injuries. Being a Miami Occupational therapist allows me to work with and help people of all ages; some of my patients are kids, others are elderly, and so many are just everyday people like you and I. I spend a lot of time getting to know the clients I service to be able to determine what highly specialized assessment and treatment I need to develop for them, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people suffering from injuries or disabilities.
Perhaps the term “occupational therapy” may sometimes be confused for being a vocational counseling or job training. Occupational therapy is the link between prompt and adequate help of hand and arm conditions and a successful recovery. It is about allowing my patients live happily and ease their worries about their injuries. As a Miami Occupational Therapist my goal is to make you HAPPY with the amazing experience you are looking for, with clear answers to put your mind at ease, and give you the best possible outcome that you want.
As our clinic grows, besides occupational therapy and certified hand therapy, we are NOW including massage therapy services to keep you moving and avoiding injuries with our wellness services! In the future…it is possible that we may expand and include physical therapy that specialize in other areas. As much as I enjoy being an occupational therapist, I also find my job and profession an important mission and acknowledge the responsibility it carries along. People put a lot of faith and hope into Miami Occupational Therapy therapy methods so I always want to be sure that my clients are happy with their experience with us and together, we can work on getting the best possible outcome!
