I’m coming out, I want the world to know, how to let it show… – ” Diana Ross

Oh that song is stuck in my head because my 6 year is singing it all the time this week for a show at her school! It’s such an up beat positive song that you can’t help but smile when you hear it. It’s one of those happy songs! That’s the kind of song you want to hear when your having a bad day. And it always seems that being an occupational therapist, people are coming to you because they are having a STRING of BAD days! They hurt themselves at work, or at home, or just trying to be active. Now everyone that comes to me have different personalities, different situations, and different attitudes. I don’t look to change that at all, they come as they come and that’s how I take them. You see that meme on social media all the time “Hug the hurt kiss the broken” that’s what I remember. That’s what I try to do, is bring a little positive in the time that I have with them to put a smile on their face. I tell jokes, I make fun of things, I make fun of them hahaha believe me!! Everyone has a sense of humor! You just have to find out what kind! I make fun of myself! Oh they love that!!! I have music on, I’ll even change it to whatever they want to listen to. Once we started listening to the comedy station and cracking up so much that we were not getting stuff done! So we had to switch it back to music. Oh! And boy do they all love some chocolate!! I always have a bowl and encourage them to take as many as they want on their way out.  Sometimes I have home made cookies for them too.  It’s the least that I can do for them to make them feel special after they let me torture them so…and they come back for more…because little bit by little bit, they see the changes and they see themselves getting better.  Hand therapy can be quite painful depending on the type of injury or surgery you have.  But helping people becoming more functional and less painful allowing them to return to what they love to do…that’s the BEST!  I love my job.  What has someone done to make you smile when you are having a bad day?  Leave your comments below.
