Hoang Tran is an Occupational Therapist (OT/L) and Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), who graduated from the University of Florida in 2000 with a master’s degree in occupational therapy. She first gained experience in acute care settings of hospitals such as Parkway and Cleveland Clinic, skilled nursing facilities, and rehabilitation centers. In 2001, she started working in acute care at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, then moved into the senior outpatient therapy setting five years later.
Soon after she accepted the outpatient position, she sat for the rigorous CHT boards and in 2006 obtained her national board certification as a Miami Certified Hand Therapist, demonstrating her competency in the practice of Miami hand therapy. A CHT is an occupational or physical therapist who, through advanced continuing education, clinical experience and integration of knowledge in anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, has become proficient in treatment of pathological upper-extremity conditions resulting from trauma, disease, and congenital or acquired deformity. To obtain the Miami Certified Hand Therapist credential, a therapist also must practice for a minimum of five years, accumulating at least 4,000 hours of treatment for hand injuries and upper-extremity disorders.
Through her medical experience in different settings, she had the opportunity to work with many complex injuries of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. She had the privilege of working alongside great doctors, nurses, and therapists. She engaged in various degrees of wound care in hospital settings and learned protocols of pre- and post-surgery, fabrication of orthosis, and protocols for conservative treatment. Besides orthopedic types of injuries, she has worked extensively with neurologic injuries such as strokes and brachial plexus injuries from the shoulder down to the hand.
In January 2014, Hoang opened Hands-On Therapy Services – center for occupational therapy and Miami hand therapy. HTS is a therapist-owned outpatient center, specializing in hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder cases that range from conservative to complex. Hoang not only is a Miami Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), but strives to continue her Miami hand therapy practice by becoming certified in other areas such as kinesiology taping techniques (CKTP) and instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM). Besides treatments, Hoang also offers functional capacity evaluations (FCE) as a certified evaluator for disability insurance companies and for workers’ compensation. She has plans to include Miami physical therapy services that specialize in common injuries such as the back and hips. She proudly can say that HTS patients are treated only by qualified occupational therapists and, in the future, only by physical therapists, not by assistants or rehab aides.
Besides running her Miami hand therapy practice, Hoang also takes great pride in providing volunteer opportunities for future OT students as well as internships for OT students working toward their master’s in occupational therapy in Miami. She is an adjunct professor at Barry University in Miami Shores for the Master’s Occupational Therapy Program. She assists and teaches on topics such as kinesiology, adult special testing, hand therapy, and orthosis fabrication. Just recently, Hoang taught a continuing education course (CEU) to fellow OTs and CHTs on the topic of custom-fitted orthosis. The class was sold out and generated amazing positive reviews and requests for future courses. Hands-On Therapy Services under Hoang’s leadership aims to be the leader in concierge therapy services, occupational therapy in Miami, as well as a center for therapist development.
