What does clicking in the shoulder mean?

I get this question A LOT…from friends, family, or anyone that finds out I help people with shoulder and hand problems! They are always asking me what does the clicking mean and should I be worried??

So I wanted to make sure to ease your mind…NO there’s nothing wrong with clicking or popping of your shoulders if it happens EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE and if there’s no pain with it. Usually just means that something like a tendon is just moving around in its’ space. If it happens here and there and with no pain, there’s really nothing to worry about. Our body sometimes makes noises. Some people even “crack” their shoulder the way they “crack” a knuckle of the finger.

The biggest tip that I can give you is that if it clicks, pops, or cracks EVERY TIME you make the same movement, that’s not good. For example, if you are working out and with every repetition, it clicks…then that is NOT good. Even without pain, your shoulder is telling you that something is out of place or there can be a specific weakness. There is a rhythm to the way your shoulder moves and if it’s clicking every time, then your shoulder is not moving well and can eventually develop into a bigger problem.

What happens over time is that certain parts of your shoulder can get tight, making that rhythm even worst. That’s when the pain can set in…and people develop an “-itis” like tendinitis or bursitis. That’s when tendons over time can tear too. One way you can stop the clicking is just to make sure you have good posture and position when reaching, lifting, or working out. So try and re-position yourself to reduce the clicking.
